To compile the unpatched version, either 
- redownload it from the upstream site,
- remove the info_TEXINFOS line from the doc/Makefile.am directory and
  re-auto-toolize
- use the debian/patch/compileable.reconf to exclude the removed files
  from the build system:

dpkg-source -x ratpoison_1.4.0.dfsg-1.dsc
tar -xzf ratpoison_1.4.0.dfsg.orig.tar.gz
mv ratpoison-1.4.0.dfsg.orig ratpoison-1.4.0.dsfg.working
